Contact with colleges and universities is a priority issue in the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and its institutes, to promote networking with these institutions and to incorporate state-of-the-art methods and know-how into applied research. Following an invitation by Prof. Stephan Noll of the Department of Biotechnology in the Faculty of Life Sciences at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Dr. Oliver Licht of the Fraunhofer ITEM Department of Chemical Risk Assessment gave a talk in the research seminar of the master’s degree program Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, where he presented the institute and recent research results from different Fraunhofer ITEM departments. His presentation included reports about preclinical research and from the Braunschweig-based Division of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, but also results of a two-part project performed over the past few years on behalf of the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) to assess biopersistent granular dusts at workplaces.Dr. Licht furthermore gave an outline of risk assessment by derivation of health-based limit values for industrial chemicals.

After his talk, future cooperation possibilities in the form of collaborative projects or master’s theses at Fraunhofer ITEM were discussed. This seemed to arouse the interest of a few students already. Based on this experience, it is planned to further strengthen the contact in the future.
