During the thematic forum on biomedical engineering, organized by Fraunhofer ITEM and the Lower Saxony Center for Biomedical Engineering, Implant Research and Development (NIFE) at the CRC Hannover on January 22, 2020, stakeholders from industry and academia discussed the topics "additive medicine 4.0" and "biomedical engineering data space". The aim of this meeting was, first, to provide information in the following subject areas:  sustainment of innovation power (additive strategies), acceleration of innovation (advanced testing), new requirements to be met under the European Medical Device Regulation (MDR), and recent developments regarding a biomedical engineering data space (data-sharing models). Second, the participants compiled requirements and criteria aimed at enabling and promoting an effective implementation of the MDR for biomedical engineering in Germany. With regard to the preparation of coordinated, location-specific measures, the results of this thematic forum will be communicated to German federal ministries and trade associations for further discussion.
