Apprenticeship as a Media and Information Services Specialist

About us

At Fraunhofer ITEM, you can look forward to a modern workplace at the CRC Hannover – one of Europe’s largest clinical research centers. Here, you can complete your apprenticeship as a media and information services specialist, choosing either the specialization in information and documentation or medical documentation.

If you choose the information and documentation specialization, you support our researchers by researching, preparing, and presenting information in a user-friendly way. You also document project reports and institute publications, help build and maintain our databases, and learn how to structure and make data and facts accessible.

If you opt for the medical documentation specialization, you will dive into the world of health data. You record and structure medical information using modern information and communication technologies, document data from clinical studies and research projects, and ensure that electronic documentation systems remain up to date and usable.

In your department, you will work with around 40 colleagues. You will also have the support of another apprentice who is already further along in their training and can share valuable experience and tips with you.

This apprenticeship position is offered every two years – so get ready for 2027!

Key information, focus areas, vocational school

You can look forward to a solid and comprehensive apprenticeship, supported and guided by experienced experts. You are not on your own: through our apprentice network, you can connect with other trainees, exchange ideas, and support one another.

To help you get off to a strong start, you benefit from the wide range of development opportunities within the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft – and you also have access to our e-learning tool, allowing you to continue learning flexibly at any time.

Your work-life balance also matters to us: with flexible working hours and the option to work partly from home, there is plenty of room for friends, family, and free time.

And because an apprenticeship is not just about learning but also about living, you can enjoy many additional benefits: attractive discounts through our corporate benefits program, 30 days of annual leave, a company pension plan, and a staff restaurant offering meals at reduced prices.

Your apprenticeship usually lasts three years, with a 39-hour work week – an exciting time in which you will grow step by step into your profession.

After your onboarding, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Learning how to systematically capture, process, secure, and index medical information using modern information and communication technologies
  • Documenting data from clinical studies and medical research projects, as well as managing and maintaining electronic documentation systems
  • Performing patient-related organizational and administrative tasks

Your vocational school

Your vocational school is the Multi Media Berufsbildende Schulen (MMBbS) Expo Plaza in Hannover. Classes take place in blocks: a few weeks of school at a time, followed by a return to practical work with us – so things never get boring.

At school, in addition to general education subjects, you will focus on learning fields relevant to your specialization in medical documentation. This means you will acquire not only the theoretical foundations but also practical knowledge and skills that you can directly apply in your work.

  • A good intermediate school-leaving certificate (Realschule) or a general (subject-specific) university entrance qualification
  • Interest in medical and scientific topics as well as working with related data
  • Good computer skills
  • Enjoyment of interacting with others and strong communication skills
  • Accuracy, patience, perseverance, and logical thinking
  • High willingness to learn, commitment, reliability, and teamwork skills
  • Good German and English skills, both written and spoken
