Article 36 organizations are scientific institutions nominated by EU Member States to support the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) through research, data analysis, and scientific expertise. The legal basis is Article 36 of Regulation (EC) No 178/2002.

With this new status, Fraunhofer ITEM can now not only participate in EFSA procurements but also apply for targeted calls for proposals – an important opportunity to contribute the scientific expertise of our researchers in toxicology, risk assessment, and chemical safety even more actively to European projects.

“We look forward to future collaboration within the EFSA network and to contributing our expertise to further strengthen food safety in Europe,” says Dr. Sylvia Escher, Division Director of Safety Assessment and Toxicology at Fraunhofer ITEM.
